Day Three Meal Time

Okay the new menu started 3 days ago, Curly is not used to seeing certain items but he has no issues eating them. The following items are in his diet:

1 yam
1 apple
1 orange
4 carrots
1 radish
1/2 avocado
Handful of sprouts
Handful of spring mix
1/4 c. Safflower Oil infused with clove of garlic and sprig of rosemary.
1/4 c. Flax
1 tbp. Kelp
1 Banana

I was unable to get avocados since they are so expensive, so I gave him more salad on the top. Next year I will have to put in a garden to help supplement costs. My husband was joking how the horses are eating better then us now. It is amazing how natural foods can help heal and prevent certain diseases. I will have to write more on this much later. So Far Curly looks to be enjoying his favorite meal of the day!

Curly @ Day 3

After finding out Curly had Cushings the odds really seemed very slim.
I got several answers from two different vets. 1) am I feeding him enough. 2) are you feeding him grain. For 1) I am currently feeding my horses one round bales at 800lbs every 10-12 days, I think that is more then enough hay to stay fat and happy. 2) Due to the large amounts of hay I give to my horses, I do not feed grain. I don't work them to death. I do give them hay stretcher to get them to have flax seeds and biotins for their coats/hooves. So this got me to thinking at feeding 2400 pounds of hay to my horses, both of them should be fat and happy. My bigger guy RiRa, does not normally bother Curly while eating, they each sit at opposite ends of the bale and eat on and off throughout the day. After talking to Gwen and Lisa, I have come to the conclusion the best way to try to feed this is through natural products and a special diet, not involving medicine or empty promises from vets.

I will be blogging Curly's progress and seeing how this diet work for him.
When I first got Curly he was very overweight, after the winter of '08, he was still the same size, i put him on an all hay diet. Spring of '09 I realized he was loosing massive amounts of weight and since he had plenty of hay I started to wonder what was up with his health.
